We Find Friends in Reading

I have been preparing an introductory lecture on the metaphors we read by for a graduate class I’ll be teaching later this summer on metaphor and thought, and here is a drawing I completed today to include in that presentation.  When we find friends in the books we read, whether they may be the narrative voice or another character, we are practicing a kind of friendship or identification or “getting over ourselves” or embrace necessary to the success of our common humanity.  (That’s why the study of literature is in the “humanities.”)
