Handmade First Drafts

Here are two handmade responses from my ENG 1302: Writing across the Curriculum students.  These drawings were pre-writing exercises in response to the first major assignment in the class, a research-project on a question derived from reading we have been doing in Dan Roam’s The Back of the Napkin and Will Eisner’s Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative.  I asked students to draw a picture of the preliminary logic of their papers (first drafts in images. if you will), and to bring those to our first conference to discuss the direction they would go in their research.  These two students are well on their way.  Some of the requirements of this first draft: 1. landscape format, at least three colors, and use a format discussed in class.  The first uses the “process” format; the second uses the “before and after” format.
