Everyone Can Swim

2 models of education

In the graduate course I’m teaching on composition studies, we are reading Peter Elbow’s Everyone Can Write.  This is my handmade response to chapters 1 and 2, particularly his critique of binary thinking in education, as well as his attempts to embrace seemingly opposing points of view in order to find value in each.

There are obvious problems with the “baby pool” and “sink or swim” model of teaching and learning (and they’re not the only two “swimming” analogies available, like the one below suggested by my colleague Terry Dalrymple), but they have their place.  It just depends.
