Read a really nice piece for today’s class by Alison Mandaville and J.P. Avila titled “It’s a Word! It’s a Picture! It’s Comics! Interdisciplinary Approaches to Teaching Comics” in one of our course texts Teaching the Graphic Novel. They explain how Mandaville, who teaches literature and women studies, and Avila, who teaches art, successfully contributed to each other’s classes. It made me wonder about team teaching and the limits we put upon ourselves when approaching interdisciplinary study. If we ask our students to become interdisciplinarians, to what degree are we modeling that identity through team teaching?
