I had my clothes and bags all packed
I was ready to grab her in my arms
I was about to board that plane and go
But the weather man he said no

Here I am in big ol’ Texas
She’s waitin in Chicago all alone
All the flights here been cancelled
Cause the weather man he said no

I’ve been waitin for weeks to see her
And I’ve been callin her every night
We’ve been puttin all our plans on hold
And then the weather man he said no

One more dinner set for one
One more night in a cold cold bed
One more mornin wakin alone
Cause that weather man he said no

A taxi’ll roll up tomorrow mornin
The skies’ll be dark, the clouds hung low
I’ll be standin, shiverin, and waitin to go
The weather man he’d better not say no

Here I am in big ol’ Texas
She’s waitin in Chicago all alone
All the flights here been cancelled
Cause the weather man he said no

Principal and Cowboy

Here is a pair of prints by my friend Brandy Agerbeck of www.loosetooth.com that I’ve placed in my office at school. I received the matched prints for my birthday back in July from my wife, and I just got around to framing them last week.

These drawings were based upon two cigar wrappers that serve as belts for the two characters. The one on the left is titled “Principal,” and the wrapper says “El Principal.” The one on the right is titled “Shaw,” and the wrapper says “Shaw’s Good Advice.”

I like them because they remind me of the situational nature of being a department head; that is, they serve as icons that remind me that sometimes I need to talk the windy jargon of the administrator, and sometimes I need to talk the simple love of the cowboy poet.

Set List

Saturday, October 24, 2009.

Here’s the set list for a reading I’m doing tonight. It will be for a Sigma Tau Delta Induction Ceremony and Dinner at Miss Hattie’s Restaurant in downtown San Angelo. This will be the first time I’ve performed my poems for my new departmental colleagues, and for ASU students, and for parents of ASU students being inducted into our honor society. I’m looking forward to a nice evening.

Sigma Tau Delta Dinner 10-24-09 Poetry Set List

The oldest of these poems is “The Meanest” written about 1985 in Boerne. The most recent ones are “Really” and “I Don’t Ask.” “Like the Dickens” and “Elevated” are two Texas poems. And the first three, “All Wrong for Each Other,” “Readers Beware,” and “Captive Audience,” are two line poems. “How Sharp” is one of my favorites.

A New Poem

I Don’t Ask

I don’t ask
For much
(Not what
My students
Would say)
But really
Not much.
But if I did
All I’d want
Is that
After hours
Jazz club
Applause
You hear
Following
The bass solo
Or upon
Recognition
Of a familiar
Standard.
Just a little
Smattering
Of love
And then
The quick sip
Of cocktails
That faith
In trios.

How It Works

This here is a photo of an original blackout poem print by Austin Kleon I just bought from 20 X 200. That there blue tag with the poem is proof of authenticity. You can see more of his blackout poems here. His book of blackout poems is coming out in April 2010.

Enchanted Rock

Monday, October 5, 2009.

Here is the Illustrated Professor with his enchanting wife Marie-Clare at the 1825′ summit of Enchanted Rock north of Fredericksburg, Texas.

Quite a beautiful sight looking west. And the view isn’t bad either.

This is the path that leads up to the summit.

Enchanted Rock is one of the largest batholiths in the US.  That’s right.  A big red granite batholith!  You should go see it yourself.

That’s the rock over my right shoulder.

After the climb, I’d recommend a trip to Cooper’s in Llano for some amazing BBQ.  You deserve it.

That’s a sweaty Illustrated Professor on the way down from the top.

AND what a visual surprise Enchanted Rock must have been for early explorers in Texas!

Here’s more on Enchanted Park.

Friday, October 2, 2009.

Today, I am heading to Austin for the weekend.  On Saturday, I am being interviewed for a documentary on my friend Suzanne Deal Booth.  This documentary is being produced by Reel Life Story, founded Cathee Weiss.  I had a chance to talk to Cathee a couple of weeks ago to prepare for the interview, and I found out that she had already seen my blog site and some of my work on my flickr photostream.  After our interview, Cathee suggested that I put together a drawing that depicted the relationship that Suzanne and I had during high school and its impact on me.
